Area 10 June 2023 Update

June 2023 Monthly report

We had a very busy month of June making the most of the excellent weather early in the month.  Whilst a few members attended the Pangbourne Classic Car Show, 24 of us headed for Calne to visit the REME Museum.  The museum gave us a warm welcome and, after viewing the wide variety of exhibits, we enjoyed lunch in their conference room.  We then drove about 15 minutes to the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum with its collection of over 100 cars and motorbikes plus a lot of memorabilia. With excellent timing, just as we had viewed all of the exhibits, a convoy of 24 red MX5s arrived and parked in an arc around our Astons.  Our thanks go to Steve and Helen Cory for arranging this double visit.

Our monthly meeting at The Spade Oak went to plan as the staff kindly reserved the function room and the tables overlooking the car park for our sole use.  We welcomed Chris Manning and his DB9 to their first meeting.

At rather short notice, we were invited to form a car club display (the only one) at the Flywheel event at Bicester Heritage.  We had a total of 20 Astons lined up opposite the AM Works display.  The marshals did such a good job of shepherding Astons that we had four non-Members parked with us, a couple of whom promised to join the club – we shall see!

To mark the longest day, we held an additional meeting at the Gerrards Cross Golf Club with our Astons again displayed around the putting green.  David & Jane Cottam added an extra dimension to the evening by setting up a 9-hole putting competition.  The prizes of bottles of wine were won by Stewart Kay and Jane Cottam whilst the charity Buckinghamshire Mind benefited to the tune of £120.

Our visit and tour of AM Works on the 24th was attended by over 40 Members.  We were arranged into groups for the tours of the service bays, trim shop, repair shop, paint shop and restoration shop. We also had the opportunity to browse the stock of heritage cars and the modern cars whilst enjoying the excellent refreshments.  Around ten Members had the opportunity to test drive the DBX707.  A final treat was to witness a Goldfinger DB5 Continuation model going through its repertoire of gadgets – revolving number plates, machine guns, oil slick (actually water was used), smoke screen and bulletproof screen were all deployed.  Steve Johnson has posted some excellent video of the gadgets on our Area 10 Facebook page Area 10 Facebook page

Our thanks go to our host Simon Bench and the several members of staff who made us all so welcome.
