In 1999 I was invited by Aston Martin Works Service to join them as their guest at Le Mans, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the team's historic win in 1959 by Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby in their DBR1. Along with the privilege of driving my own DB6 Mk1 around the entire track before the start of the race, we were treated to a talk by the great men themselves. Armed with my instruction book, I grasped the nettle and asked them both to sign it. Which of course, being true gentlemen, they both duly did. This remains one of my most treasured Aston Martin artefacts.
