AML had almost done the impossible by selling 50 cars to buyers who had never seen it. So it made sense to capitalise on this success and build an open version of the Zagato. The car was first shown at the 1987 Geneva salon and limited production was planned. So as not to upset the owners of the closed car, the Volante Zagato got the fuel injected engine, although some cars had the Vantage engine retrofitted back at the factory. An unusual feature of the Volante are the headlights which are covered by 'eyelids' which retract upwards when the lights are on. Although 25 cars were planned, a total of 37 examples were completed to satisfy customer demand.
