Newport Pagnell V8s (1969-1989)
|
The open version was introduced many years after the standard car. This was mostly due to the belief that convertibles would be unacceptable in the important US market and the instability of AML during the early 1970's. But when the Volante finally was shown in 1978 it became an instant success especially in the US.
In 1986, the Volante received fuel injection but also became available with the powerful Vantage engine. Also the V8 Vantage Volante received extensive so-called aerodynamic aids far in excess of the closed car. As well as an extreme air dam, the car was finished with wide wheel arches and side skirts. For those who found the bodywork additions a little too excessive, the Prince of Wales for example, a small number of Volantes were built with the standard bodywork plus the Vantage engine. These highly sought after cars are known as the POW Vantage Volantes.
