Newport Pagnell V8s (1969-1989)
|
Traditionally, owners of Aston Martins were always given the option of a 'tweaked' engine as an option and such cars were known as 'Vantage'. By 1976 the V8 finally received the 'Vantage' treatment but, instead of just a more powerful engine, the V8 Vantage was a completely separate model in it's own right. Power output was increased to around 380 bhp, the suspension was uprated and the car received a large air dam, blanked off grille and tail spoiler.
Development of the Vantage continued in line with the standard car although fuel injection never replaced the four twin choke down draught Weber carbs. By 1986 the Vantage received the 'X-pack' engine developed for the Zagato, which was capable of producing up to 435 bhp. With a top speed in excess of 170 mph and a 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds the Vantage was arguably the fastest production car of it's day and is considered the first British member of the Supercar Club.
