Newport Pagnell V8s (1969-1989)
|
Production of the AM V8 had only just recommenced a few months before AML stunned the automotive world by showing the startlingly futuristic AM Lagonda at the 1976 Motor Show. William Towns had designed the ultimate sharp edged wedge; a long, low, four door saloon which offered a tantalising glimpse into the future. Under the skin was a stretched V8 platform and the familiar V8 engine, but everything else was very new. Of special note were the digital instrument displays and touch sensitive buttons. Unfortunately it was predominantly these electronic toys that delayed the production of the Lagonda until very late in 1978.
As with the V8 the Lagonda was gradually evolved, the instruments were replaced initially with Cathode Ray tubes (TV's) and then with fluorescent displays; plus fuel injection was introduced simultaneously with the V8. The car itself got a facelift by William Towns in 1987 losing the sharp edges and the 'pop-up' headlamps.
The Lagonda was something of a sales success for AML with total production reaching 645 examples in a run of 11 years. Most examples were exported with around 30% going straight to the oil rich Middle East - these were very expensive motor cars!
