Newport Pagnell i6 Cars (1958-1973)
|
Following on from the success of a lightweight DB4 (DP199) at Silverstone in 1959 in the hands of Sterling Moss, Aston Martin unveiled the DB4GT at the London Motor Show. Shortened by taking 13 cm out of the wheelbase, lightened by using thinner gauge aluminium and deleting the rear seats but also considerably more powerful with a claimed 302 bhp from the tuned engine equipped with triple Weber carburettors. The GT was the first Aston Martin to feature the headlamps recessed behind a perspex cowl - which continued right through to the last of the DB6's and can still be seen in essence to the DB7 today. Although the top speed of 150 mph was indeed impressive, the DB4GT party piece was its ability to go from a standing start, up to 100 mph and brake to a standstill in 20 seconds.
Despite their racing heritage and with many examples having extensive racing histories, the 75 GTs have survived extremely well and now command a substantial premium over the standard car.
