Newport Pagnell i6 Cars (1958-1973)
|
The DB4 was nothing short of sensational when it first appeared at the 1958 London Motor Show. This completely new car featured a platform chassis by Harold Beach, which after continuous modifications, was still in use until the end of V8 production in 2000. The Italian styled 2+2 coachwork by Touring of Milan featured lightweight Superleggera construction, and under the bonnet was a powerful 3.7 litre straight six cylinder engine by Tadek Marek. Power output was claimed to be 240 bhp, which was sufficient to propel the DB4 up to 140 mph with 0-60 acceleration just below 9 seconds. Construction started in 1959, principally at the Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire which was to be the centre of Aston Martin to this day.
By 1961, a stunning convertible, completely redesigned by Aston Martin was introduced. Arguably, the prettiest Aston, it is also extremely rare with a mere 70 examples produced.
Another derivative introduced in 1961 was the more powerful DB4 Vantage, which featured the cowled headlight as previously seen on the DB4GT. Power output from the 'special series' engine was up to 266 bhp with the addition of a third SU carburettor, bigger valves and a higher compression ratio.
The DB4 continued in production with regular updates and model additions until 1963 by which time 1110 examples (including convertibles) had been built
