In order to broaden the appeal of the DB2, the DB2/4 was introduced at the 1953 London Motor Show complete with the addition of two small rear seats to make a useful 2+2. But in a more radical move, the car was given a rear top hinged door which nowadays would be referred to as a hatchback. With the small rear seats folded down, the DB2/4 had gained a useful space as a GT could be used for extensive touring without compromising on luggage.
Initially introduced with the 2.6 engine in Vantage tune, a short time later, an enlarged 2.9 litre was offered as an option. With 140 bhp available, maximum speed had grown to a genuine 120 mph. Again, as with the outgoing DB2, the DB2/4 was offered as a drophead coupe. Demand was even stronger than for the DB2 with 566 examples completed over three years.
