Most of my reports are to inform members of changes in legislation or consultation documents to which we are responding. In this newsletter, we are seeking feedback on two topics to help us in our discussions with the relevant authorities.
Firstly, recent implementation of anti-crime legislation has resulted in a more complex procedure to obtain a replacement number plate. A recent consultation paper issued by DVLA proposes additional requirements on the manufacture and content of number plates e.g. 'chips', retailer identification, make and model of car, VIN number etc. Whilst DVLA are proposing to exempt pre-1973 number plates the Federation is concerned that pressure from law enforcement authorities may prevent any exceptions.
During the last five years how many club members are known to have had a pre-1974 vehicle stolen?
What were the ages of the vehicles?
Were the vehicles fitted with 'false' plates after the theft? (If known.)
Secondly, the FBHVC has been in correspondence with a member club regarding vehicles grounding on speed humps. If members of your club have had similar problems, we'd like to hear about it, please.
Which makes and models have had problems?
What is the ground clearance when loaded with a normal passenger and luggage load?
This newsletter editor's own 1980 TR8 has certainly had problems with certain designs of road humps, and we look forward to receiving other members' experiences.
Unfortunately, we need feedback on these issues by the end of September for it to be of value, and we recognise that this leaves clubs with little time to include anything in their newsletters. To save delays, we would welcome immediate feedback from club contacts who have comments to make and suggest that any notice in club newsletters asks individual members to contact the FBHVC secretary directly (preferably by e-mail at
