It was in the winter of 1952 that John Wyer found the perfect location for his Aston Martin team. The Hotel de France at La Chartre sur le Loir was to become JW's home from home at Le Mans for the next 20 years, as he firstly took Astons to victory in '59. Then having introduced Gulf Oil into motor racing, he again collected the winners laurels under the J.W. Automotive banner, with his GT40's in'68 and '69.
In 1970 and '71 his iconic Gulf sponsored Porsche 917's didn't win Le Mans, but they did seem to win everything else, including the World Sportscar Championship, and of course starred in the Steve McQueen film "Le Mans". JW then went into semi-retirement, and so exactly 40 years on the Club held a tribute to him, in the very restaurant where he had briefed his drivers before each 24 Hr race. Things of course have now come full circle, and Gulf Oil are once again involved in motor racing, sponsoring Aston Martin - John's ‘first love' - so making the tribute even more fitting.
There are still a few of the very limited edition double DVD's left, that have been produced by the AMOC, telling the story of John Wyer's career through unique period footage put together by Neville Hay, and the story of the day at La Chartre filmed for home use by our very own Brian Joscelyne; where Derek Bell had kindly agreed to be the events Patron. We were lucky enough to also be joined by Sir Stirling Moss, Harley Cluxton, Michael Salmon and Maitland Cooke all of whom were captured on film by BKJ reminiscing about their time spent with JW.
If you would like a copy please be quick as they are selling out very quickly. They are still priced at just £20 + £5.00 p&p, and available through Marc Aylott
