| Racing legend Sir Stirling Moss celebrated his illustrious career and 80th birthday last night alongside the veteran voice of motor sport Murray Walker, at Octane magazine’s first ever event at The Royal Automobile Club (RAC) in Pall Mall. The two old friends talked late into the night about meeting racing legends such as Nuvolari and Fangio; current Formula One (both Stirling and Murray agreed that conventional gearboxes and fewer electronic aids would make the racing more interesting), Jenson Button’s chances of winning the world championship (2:1 odds says Stirling); and the highs and lows of racing single-seaters and sports cars. Sir Stirling is admanant that, although his wages were never particularly high, he had a much better life than current F1 stars. The sold out evening was a truly unique night out with the dynamic duo, Sir Stirling Moss and Murray Walker, discussing Stirling’s very special career in motor racing. It included a champagne reception, followed by a three course dinner and audience Q&A sessions. In celebration of his 80 years, Sir Stirling Moss received a specially commissioned sculpture of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. The sculpture, by Kevin Hicks, took almost 500 hours to complete, using a mix of traditional and modern casting techniques. Sir Stirling Moss turned 80 years old on 17th September and he is still regarded as one of the most famous and successful racing drivers ever. His racing career began in 1948 and ended in 1962, and his victories spanned the Mille Migila, Formula One and sports car racing. He is still very active and has just returned from racing his Osca at Spa in Belgium. This isn’t the first time that Sir Stirling Moss and Murray Walker have worked together of late. Both men are involved in the smash hit pre-school programme, Roary the Racing Car – a series which introduces children to motor racing for the first time. Robert Coucher, editor of Octane magazine, commented: “It was a pleasure to host such a great evening for the legendary Sir Stirling Moss. The event in the Mountbatten Room was packed out and it was a joy to listen to the great man talk about his long and well-respected career in motor racing with the world’s best motor sports commentator, Murray Walker.” To view exclusive footage of Sir Stirling Moss and Murray Walker at the Octane Magazine event, or for images of the evening, visit, www.octane-magazine.com. |
